[am-pyoo-teyt] / ˈæm pyʊˌteɪt/

Meaning: to cut off part of the body(especially hands or legs) for medical reasons.

In some unfortunate situations, doctors have to remove a part of the body surgically. That procedure is called amputation.

John met with an accident and his leg was very badly injured. The doctor had to surgically cut off John’s leg.

We can say, ‘The doctor amputated John’s leg, they had no other option.”

The procedure is called amputation and John is an amputee.

Rahul is amputee as Rahul was suffering from a serious infection last year so doctor had to amputate his leg so that the infection couldn’t harm him anymore.
