Take the cake
Meaning: An extreme example of something good or bad or shocking.
Imagine, you are a teacher and 20 of your students took a test. Shockingly everybody scored less than 40%, but one student John scored just 5%.
Now you can say, “Everyone did bad in the test, but John takes the cake.”
(In this situation, we used Take the cake to talk about a bad example.)
Imagine you are an artist. You put 20 of your paintings for sale and all of them were sold. 19 of your paintings sold for less than $1000. But one particular painting was sold for $20,000.
Now someone can say, “All your painting were sold for good price, but this one takes the cake.“
(In this situation, we used Take the cake to talk about a good example.)
